Ukiah Daily Journal - Today's promotions

Just a quick note for those that have visited Ukiah Daily Journal and now have a toolbar in the bottom that is showing Today's Promotions. You will not be able to get rid of it unless you go in to your browsers settings and disable Javascript. I also cleared all internet cache/temporary files and then enabled Javascript again (but not on Ukiah Daily Journal's website.)

You will also experience that it is much faster to download their page when Javascript is off.

Reinstall, Replace or Reuse Your Computer

For all of my customers that have old or slow computers we offer a FREE evaluation of what to do with their computer.

Make sure that you have a FULL baciukp of all data. We will do a free evaluation and let you what we think will be the best solution.

Scenario Your cost: Solution:
Recycle: The computer has a CPU that is faster than 1GHz and the memory is adequate for normal use (512MB or more). You don't want it anymore, but you want it to be available for someone else. $0

We will test the components and make sure it is working fine. We will then will erase everything on the computer and reinstall the operating system, antivirus solutions and OpenOffice. If the computer came with other software we might consider using that.

We put it out for sale so that someone else can use it. They pay $75 for our time in reinstallation and testing. There is no warranty on parts etc.

Recycle and replace: The computer is so old (slower than 1GHz processor) that there is no use in giving it to anyone and you don't want it. You might want to buy a new computer from us. $25

Wipe out all data so that it will not be possible to retrieve any data from the hard drives.

Bring the computer to the recycling center for you.

Reinstall and reuse: You want the computer to be formatted and reinstalled so that it works as good as when it was new, and then use it or give it to someone you know. $75 Format the drive and reinstall the OS, all drivers and MS updates. If any other programs are required, they will be added to the bill based on how much time it takes.

Updates, Moving and Future CPUs

Security updates & upgrades

This week a lot of companies have released security updates for their products. These companies have released updates: Apple for Mac OS X, Microsoft for Internet Explorer, Adobe for Shockwave and Realplayer. Please update your software if you have any of these programs on your computer. The last days 4-5 other security issues have been found and they can when combined, let a hacker take full control of the computer.

Firefox launched version 3.6 of its browser last week, but I suggest that you wait until they come out with a fix. The latest version doesn't display all web pages correctly. However, if you want your web browsing to be a little bit faster and take advantage of more of the coming HTML 5 standard for showing web pages, please install it.

Moving

Alden Tech & Design will be MOVING FEBRUARY 15, 2010 to a new downtown location "just around the corner".

New Location:
Alden Tech & Design
216 W. Perkins St. #105
[private entrance on Oak]

Our new office [blue building on the corner of Perkins and Oak] has it's own separate entrance on Oak Street which should make it very convenient for our customers. Hopefully, you will find that the parking in this location is just a slight bit easier than on School Street. (turn right on Oak from Perkins and look for a place to park....our entrance is on the Northwest end of the building where the awning is. Just look for our sign!).

Welcome to our first newsletter, new web pages, new blog and an online store in our near future.

Join us February 5th on School Street for our Ukiah First Friday's Artwalk featuring local artists and refreshments.

Stop by our new location after the 15th. Walk ins welcome!

CPUs of the future

The current CPUs are at the limit of what they can perform with the current materials they are built of. On Monday Chalmers tekniska högskola in Gøteborg, that they succeeded in making a new CPU based on graphene.

Graphene is a carbon based material that can be very thin, but still work faster than silisium which our current processors are using. The electrons in graphene move 100 times faster than in silisium.

The estimate for the new material is that new processors can have a speed of 300GHz and up to several THz.

Digi.no article about graphene (Norwegian)

Chalmers.se article about the breakthrough (Swedish)

There is also an article in Nature Nanotechnology, but you have to pay in order to read it.

Books

Note that you have to check out books separate from all other items in the store.

Computer Consulting

Microsoft Certified Systems AdministratorI have been learning about/working with computers since 1984. I got my first job working as a teacher in 1989 and started working as a computer consultant in 1990 in Norway. I have completed 9 certifications in Microsoft operating systems and have made sure I have followed the market and continued learning to keep up with all the new hardware and software technology.

My services span the following areas:

  • Install, maintain and troubleshoot servers, network, workstations, printers (not hardware errors), routers, other hardware.
  • Install, maintain and troubleshoot: Operating systems (Microsoft Windows 9x, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 2000/20003/2008 server).
  • Office systems (Microsoft Office 9x, 2000, 2003 and 2007).
  • Intuit Quickbooks (installation and transfer).
  • Antivirus and antispyware installation and removal of viruses, spyware and other malware.
  • Other software that you need or are using.
  • Recommendations about upgrades or new installations.
  • Upgrading your computer with more efficient power supplies, bigger hard drives or other components that you may need.

When I started learning about computers I was amazed by networks and servers and how they work together. After many years in the computer business I have several certificates from Comp TIA and Microsoft in hardware and software.

Go Green!

The love for designing and constructing quality computers, servers and networks became a part of my professional work. Building energy efficient and quality computers is of prime importance to me. Most computers will save as much as 85% of their power by getting new power supplies, and your computer will still do what you want it to do. This also applies to older computers that have a standard power supply that can be changed out. Yes, the computer will initially cost a bit more, but you will normally save the extra money in about 3-12 months, depending on your usage. This is a simple step to care for the resources of our Earth.

Website Services

My goal as a web designer is to work with you in creating a web presence and signature look for you or your business. My goal as a programmer is to build a website design with a clean infrastructure and program solutions to meet your business needs.

As a web designer I specialize in web pages that are beautiful, accessible, fast and easy to download and update.

We will give you a free initial consultation to assess what you need and how we can make your web presence fulfill your needs.

We do database construction for web sites with special needs. Mainly we program for MySQL, but we can also work in PostGreSQL if you prefer that.

All websites will be programmed using HTML, CSS and PHP. Using HTML as the basis for all pages make it easy for you or others to work on the pages as well.

Install, maintain and support of solutions for blogging, e-commerce etc. is some of the tasks that we do. Very often this is done as an add-on to existing web sites as demand increases on the web site.

Installing, configuring, designing templates and maintaing Drupal for high-end web sites or for web sites where you and others need to edit the content or collaborate
